GPS Post-Processing Workshop

August 16 @ 8:30 am - 4:30 pm

Course Summary

With the advent of RTK GNSS equipment and real time processing of observation positions right in your GNSS receiver, it might seem that old fashioned time consum- ing static observations will fall out of favor as outmoded.

In fact, static post processing for GPS or GNSS Control Points on a project are twice as accurate as RTK both for horizontal and vertical position.

Static observations need to be processed well after the observations are taken. We will learn why we are waiting before processing our results. After reviewing some basic facets of our observations and tools needed for post processing, we will carry out an exercise in “easy” post processing through National Geodetic Surveys “OPUS” programs on the internet. We will look at the results and evaluate the meaning of the OPUS position report.

After reviewing the shortcomings of the OPUS static post processed solution, we will identify how proprietary GNSS post processing software can add value to our static position results. We will use Topcon Tools GNSS post processing software in demonstration mode to pro- cess a baseline against 3 CORS stations. We will learn the general steps needed to perform post processing in any GNSS post processing software and come up with results for a baseline.

To complete this workshop and get PDH or CEU credits you will perform an analysis of both approaches to post processing static field observations on a spreadsheet pro- vided and emailed to the instructor. A minimum score of 70% is required to gain the credits for this workshop.
